How to Start a Neighborhood Group

The issues facing some neighborhoods may require a stronger alliance of individuals working together for change. In this case, forming a group of individuals working toward a common cause can be helpful.
One Joplin has created workshops that can help you organize in a way that is helpful for your neighborhood needs.

Investing Safe Housing & Neighborhood Appearance

Property Investment

Neighborhood appearance contributes greatly to the sense of pride and how the neighborhood is perceived among its residents and to those outside of the community. Joplin is comprised of neighborhoods in various stages of their life cycle. However, neighborhood health is not defined by the age of the community or the income level. In healthy neighborhoods, stakeholders work together to address challenges.

If you find that your neighborhood is in a state of physical decline, you're not alone. There are several ways to address this issue:

Neighborhood Clean-Ups

Every September, a group of area churches and organizations lead an initiative called the Great Day of Service. Area churches  and organizations partner with neighborhood leaders to clean-up Joplin. Thousands of volunteers participate, tons and tons of trash is removed from private property, and the City of Joplin aids by providing dumpsters, trash bags and logistics for the event. You can partner in this event by contacting us or the City of Joplin.

Help Meet a Neighbor's Need

Sometimes property maintenance issues go unaddressed because of circumstances in the property owner or renter's personal life. There may be times, when it's appropriate to find out if your neighbor is in need. If you do find a need, and are personally unable to provide help, organizations like Watered Gardens' Neighbor Connect Program, Hearts with Hammers, and Economic Security work with neighbors to assess and meet needs.
